Contactless card PIN limits are to increase temporarily, from $100 to $200, to help reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission.

This change will reduce the need for physical contact with payment terminals as a PIN will only be required on transactions over $200.

From Tuesday 7th of April 2020, members of The Mutual Bank will be able to make contactless payments of up to $200, without a PIN, using their Mutual Visa Debit and Mutual Visa Credit cards. The increase to contactless transaction limits is subject to merchant discretion, and is progressively rolling out to certain retailers, with major supermarkets expected to be the first to accept the increased contactless transaction limit. When paying for purchases, members should be guided by following the PIN pad prompts. The new $200 limit is expected to apply for a three-month period and will be extended if required.

“The Mutual Bank is steadfastly committed to ensuring the health and safety of our members and our team, and this is yet another practical measure to help reduce the risk level across our community,” said Geoff Seccombe, CEO of The Mutual Bank.

“The decision to increase the limit for contactless payments is a sensible and strategic step by industry body AusPayNet to assist the community help combat the spread of COVID-19. For more information our members should contact our Member Service Team on 1300 688 825,” said Mr Seccombe.

Contactless transactions are highly secure, however, members are encouraged to look after their cards like cash to protect against theft.
